A graduate of University of Virginia Law School, Sam has practiced corporate immigration law since 1977. He served as President of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (“AILA”), a national association of over 14,000 immigration attorneys. He helped direct AILA’s legislative action strategy during the 101st Congress, which contributed to the passage of the Immigration Act of 1990. In subsequent congresses, Sam actively participated in immigration law reform activities related to business immigration issues, and has testified before the U.S. Congress and the Minnesota State Legislature on immigration law.
Sam has been listed among the “Best Lawyers in America in Immigration Law” by the American Lawyer since the publication’s inception, Minnesota Law & Politics Super Lawyers for corporate immigration, the Lawyers World Global Award recipients, and Corporate International Magazine. He was also recognized in the International Who’s Who of Corporate Immigration Lawyers 2007-2011 as one of the top 15 lawyers in the world “most highly regarded” in corporate immigration law.
In 2014, Best Lawyers in America named Sam “Lawyer of the Year” in Minnesota in the field of immigration law.
Sam founded, and taught, the Immigration Law Clinic at the William Mitchell School of Law and is currently an adjunct faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Law. He chairs the Board of The Advocates for Human Rights, a Minnesota-based international and national human rights organization.
